Elle genuinely blushed as he took her hand with his and kissed it. She wasn't sure quite what wanted to do. It was one thing to do such toying in public places, but it would be much different in his room. She didn't know him well enough to know what he would do in true privacy.
She had to admit that he played along very well though and was almost tempted to keep playing her game. At the same time though she knew that many of the single guys in town would be infuriated if she even went as far as the door of the inn. "Well in all honesty I don't think we should. If I remember correctly you are not one to settle down for long. Me on the other hand, I have to keep my options open sir. I am truly sorry."
Elle knew the game to some extent had to be cut short. At the same time though she was half tempted to continue it in another way. "Of course, you probably knew that. Besides you wouldn't really take advantage of such a sweet lady like me would you?" She batted her eyelashes at him as she smiled at him a little shy smile.

LARABEE lonely 'slinger, lookin' for a job Josiah smirked widely, he had her bluff. "Of course not, wouldn't want people thinking anything." he had trouble not laughing. This was entirely strange to him, flirting. He felt out of his element, and very uncomfortable, despite the fact that he seemed to be enjoying his self, to the smallest of extents.
Josiah, this time, allowed his self to laugh. "Well, Miss, I figured you might not carry on after that. I'm really not here to look for anything other than a job. I'd be much obliged to, perhaps, be your friend, though." he offered as a compromise. "And you're quite correct. I'd never take advantage of a lady such as yourself, or any other, for that matter." Josiah though, perhaps this would be enough to make her hold back on the advances [/blockquote]

"Friend sounds good," she told him while nodding her head a little. "Although you are fun to flirt with. I guess I'll have to get over that though." She frowned and wished that that wasn't the case, but it was. "So maybe you could show me home sometime."
Elle was running out of things to say and do when it came to this guy. He had just taken away almost all the fun she had planned for them. It was as if he had planned to ruin all of her fun. "Hopefully we didn't make the other guys in town too jealous." She gave him a little smirk and then looked away.
"I guess I should let you get to finding that job that you talk about. By no means would I want to be the reason why you don't have one. Just hopefully it's not a job that's a conflict of interest when it comes to our friendship."

LARABEE lonely 'slinger, lookin' for a job Josiah smirked and winked at the lady. He felt a bit more at-ease around her, although the smile faded from his face, and it grew cold as he saw a carriage riding into town at full-tilt. His arms folded across his chest and he watched as a group of drunks went howling up to the bar. "Get many of these?" he asked.
The scene wasn't unfamiliar to him, he had been down south towards Texas way, where this was practically a daily occurance. He hadn't been around here much to know wether it happened towards the north just as much as it did down there. Although, this was hardly a lawless town so he doubted it did.
"I've got time. All I've got is time, to get a job." Josiah laughed. "If you're up to it, I could show you home right now." He offered out his arm. "And perhaps, if you ask the right questions you might even get a story out of it."

"Some every now and then during the week." She looked over at him curious as to why he asked. "I wouldn't worry about it. Besides isn't the sheriff's duty to worry about it?" She gave him a look.
"Well maybe you could clear up some things for me. You know, about the going ons outside of this town. I've heard some of the travelers talk about some things that you don't necessarily see or hear around here. Then again us ladies don't see or hear of much around here. The guys try to make sure of that."
She smiled at him. "It'd be nice to have the company of a friend. Just remember I want to hear some good stories. I won't take any less granted how well traveled you seem to be." Elle looked down at her feet and then back up at him. "Oh and absolutely no detours. You can't trust anyone that travels off of the main roads for the most part around here."

LARABEE lonely slinger, lookin' for a job Josiah smirked slightly. "I like to know who's in town... keep me alive longer." he said simply. He watched the men carefully, remembering the last time he had delt with a group like that, it had involved stopping a black man from being hanged unrightfully. Josiah was pretty easygoing with racial groups, or anything else for that matter. He didn't mind women stepping out of their shells everyonce and again, Elle might have been a serious overstep, but he enjoyed her nonetheless. He was a shier man, and tended to let everyone else step outside the boundries, while he ran about watching them all and makign sure they were alright. "You never know who might show up." he mumbled.
"Ask away, what do you want to know about then? Stories, tales, news of the outside world. Anything you need to know, I'll be glad to share." Josiah shrugged. "You'll just hafta.. give me a bit of direction. I'm not the biggest talker around." he nodded slightly, his eyes returning to the group of men cautiously.
He didn't like the big crowd, nor did he like the druken way they staggered about with the guns at their sides, and in their wagons. He wanted to leave as soon as possible

"Well everybody keeps on telling me that I shouldn't go near strange guys because they might take advantage of me. At the same time however they tell me about these women, well I don't know what they really call them, but some people around her like to call them wild women when they're talking to me. They're supposedly women that set up shop at a town's inn and well... you know. Do those kind of women actually exist or are they just telling me stories?"
Elle watched as he kept looking over at the drunken guys and kind of understood why he was doing so. At the same time she didn't think much of the drunks because it was such a common thing. "I'm sure they're just passing through. They probably got too drunk and got lost. It's usually how it is, sir." She then wondered if he was looking for anyone specific in the crowd of drunks, but decided not to ask. No, that would just give her more information than she could probably bare to know.
"Come on now, and relax a little," she told him as she started to lead him on the right path to taking her home. "You wouldn't want to let little old me down now would you?" She looked at him with pleading eyes that hopefully told him to stop thinking so much about everyone else and just enjoy things for a least a little while.

LARABEE lonely slinger, lookin' for a job Josiah's eyebrows tilted upwards. "Wild Women?" Josiah thought for a moment. "... you mean prostitutes? Women who sell their bodies?" he flushed at the thought. "Well, yah they exist. For some women it's their lifestyle."he shrugged slightly. "Not a very glamourous one, and a lot of them get murdered...." he stopped. "I wouldn't suggest getting mixed up in them." he shrugged with finality.
Josiah didn't think much of those women, although some of them didn't really have much of a choice it was that or poverty. Josiah would never succumb to something like that, hisself, but he knew several men who liked to keep away the bite of the lonely nightes with soem womanly attention. He wasn't one of those men, and he highly doubted he ever would be.
"No, of course not." Josiah spoke slowly, glancing over his shoulder, another figure emerging from the carriage, and his face went pale, he turned his head back to the road. "Ask away, m'am." he said, his steps becoming longer and slightly faster.

Elle knew something was up with her new when his pace seemed to become faster than one most men would take when it came to walking a lady home. Just the same she kept up with some ease. There was something about that new wagon of passersby that made him take such a pace and she knew all too well that it was better not to ask why. Instead she would try to side track him just enough to get him to relax and slow down his pace just a bit.
"Did you ever have a serious crush on a girl before you got into your profession?" She knew it was a bit of a personal question, but she was curious. He had to have a soft side she thought and she had to find it. "I mean, a good looking guy like you had to have had some luck with the ladies at some point."
She really hoped that would distract him from whomever might have been on that wagon. Maybe just maybe he'd let up and she could go at a pace a little better suited for going distances in her dress. That was the one problem with the dress, you couldn't move in it all that well at higher speeds.

LARABEE lonely 'slinger, lookin' for a job At Elle's question Josiah slowed, and fell very silent. He looked to the ground, his footsteps the loudest thing about him. "Once." he said after some time. "Once I thought that I had my life in order, thought that I'd get myself a wife and have some kids." Josiah sighed. "Daughters.... I've always wanted a little daughter, I wouldn't mind not having a son... they leave. Daughters just seem like the kind that needs to be protected, and cared for with everythin' you got." Josiah mumbled.
He looked away. "But that was a long time ago, now." he said, slowly letting out a breath and looking to the sky, just beyond the wide brim of his hat. "A very long time ago, it seems." he murmered quietly. Maybe too long ago for him to even remember the look of the womans face. But, no, the image of her was imprinted in his memory. The vivid lights and the expressions of his lover, and his best friend, his fiancee, and the closest thing he'd had ever to complete happiness. And then she died and he was left alone, and it near burned his soul away.
It was a hard thing to think about, to remember, but he never could forget it. Despite how hard he tried. [/blockquote]

Elle wasn't use to men being so honest and emotional, at least not around her. "She was a very lucky woman," she told him in a soft tone. "I'm sure you would of been a great father to those girls you think about." She felt bad for him, sad for him, and just couldn't bring herself to look at him. It made her rather uncomfortable that he was so emotional. Not because she looked down upon it, but because she wasn't use to it.
She then wondered if her father looked at having a daughter the same way Josiah thought about having daughters. Did her father like having someone that he got to keep around and that wouldn't leave him, much like his wife? A tear started to form in her eye, but Elle fought it off with all her might. She couldn't cry because she knew it would tempt him to cry and she couldn't have that.
"If you don't mind telling me, what was her name?" Elle finally managed to look over at him. She looked at him and felt like hugging him, but she knew better than to do so.

LARABEE lonely 'slinger, lookin' for a jobn Josiah nodded a bit, it hurt to hear that. That she had been a lucky woman, that he could've been more than just a wanderer. "I think I was the lucky one." Josiah replied, and took one more deep breath and seemed to settle a bit. Like he wasn't so bothered by the situation. Honestly he was just trying to hide his deep discontent at stirring up memories such as that.
Josiah smiled. "Her name was Eloise." he replied. "She was the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen in my life, and I made a complete fool of myself trying to introduce myself and a friend." he chuckled. "Words were never my strong suit" he admitted. "But, she fell for me nonetheless. I have no idea how, or why." he laughed. [/blockquote]

"You both were lucky." It was more of a way to assure him that she understood how he felt about her, his ex and the love of his life. "It is sweet, seeing you and hearing you talk about her like you do. I can see why she fell for you. You are kind of a soft one under your rough exterior."
"Not to mention that you are fun to toy around with," she told him with a bit of a smirk. "You like the attention don't you?" Elle already knew the answer, but wanted to hear him say it. "I do not think she would have a problem with it. She would want you to be happy."
Elle played with her hair some and smiled at him. She wanted him to be happy even if he couldn't have what he had wanted at one point, to stay settled down with the love of his life. It was then that she thought to look around a bit. Was anyone following them? She didn't think so. Good, I can play around with him a little she thought.

LARABEE lonely 'slinger, lookin' for a job Josiah blushed visibly and pulled at his hankercheif with embarrasment. "Thank you, Miss." he cleared his throat. "But ehh... this stays between us, or I may take back everything I said." he winked at her coyly. Alright, so there it was again, piling up over-confindence to hide the pain. But it worked.
Josiah laughed. "The attention is something I could do without, but Eloise liked to do that too." Josiah admitted, with a small shrug. He was an easy person to get embarrased, or bothered. Especially angry, or sad.
When Josiah saw her cast a glance about, he remembered why he had been so tense before. "Try to avoid looking around too much. If there is someone following, they'll get a good look at your face and I'm not sure the townsfolk would like me too much if I started a gunfight in here, to protect you." he murmered softly, most of it was ment as a joke, but he knew that if anyone was in trouble here, and the Sherrif didn't have it under control, Josiah would take the matter into hisown hands and ride off into the sunlight.

"Don't worry, I have never had a problem keeping a secret for a friend. Just the same I would prefer that you do not bring up anything I do in your presence when we are alone to any of the guys at the ranch. They would probably be determined to chase you off themselves if you did, and than I wouldn't have my one still interesting person in the whole town anymore."
Elle listened especially close as he brought his true love up again. She knew that playing with one's hair for a girl was about the only way to flirt and get a mans attention that also was a natural reaction to so many things for some people. Elle was one of those people, and occasionally she made some guys think she was flirting when she hadn't meant to.
Not that long after Josiah caught onto her glances and made her feel even more paranoid. There was something more to that whole deal with the wagon she figured. She hated the thought of asking, but she had to now. It would be to hard to just go on like she hadn't heard his worry. Why would you have to protect me and from who?" Elle looked at him with a stern look.
