Name: Charles Whitman
Age: 43
Gender: Male
Heritage: Caucasian
Job Position: Reverend
Physical Description: The Rev. Whitman does not cut a very imposing figure. He is short and stocky in build, though very little of his bulk is fat. His hair is dark, nearly black, greying at the temples, and he keeps it (thanks in part to his wife’s reminders) well-groomed; his face sports sideburns, but the rest is clean-shaven. He doesn’t dress very distinctively and doesn’t keep up with the latest fashions, though his wife always makes sure he looks put together. He is physically fit, with strong muscles from his penchant for hard work, but not particularly agile, and he’s starting to feel his age.
Personality: The first thing anyone would say about the reverend is that he is always willing to lend a helping hand, no matter how tough the job. He seems to be constantly on the move, never content to sit by and watch others do the work. This includes dispensing advice, as he is wont to do without provocation, and his counsel is usually peppered with references to scripture. However, though strong in faith himself, his hard-bitten life has taught him to put more stock in deeds than faith alone. He can seem stern and his memory is long for major offenses against him, but he will abandon even a grudge if someone needs his help.
Past: The Whitmans were one of the first families to settle in Cahone, transplanting themselves to the badlands that Colorado seemed to be in the eyes of their young son Charlie. However, as years passed he grew to love the land, its desolate beauty, despite the hardships they faced. Disease, attacks by the natives, and an unfortunate run-in with a rattlesnake whittled the family down gradually until only his mother and two brothers were left.
Charles had decided to follow his calling to the priesthood, but the seminaries were all back east, so he reluctantly packed his bags and headed for Chicago. He spent several years there. One night at a poetry reading he met a young lady named Helen. As they became acquainted, they grew closer and closer until a proposal of marriage was the only logical next step. To his delight she accepted, and they were married not long after his ordination.
They stayed for a few years in the city, and Charles took a position as assistant minister at a smaller church. Meanwhile, he was receiving letters from home, reminding him relentlessly every week how much he missed it. When he got word that his brother Miles had broken a leg falling from his horse, Charles thought it was as good a time as any to take his wife to meet the family, so he and Helen rushed out to Colorado. Weeks stretched into months as he tended to his brother, and when finally it came time to return to the city, he convinced his wife to stay in Cahone instead. She seemed ambivalent to the idea, but respected her husband’s wishes and has to all appearances settled into her role as minister’s wife.
