Name: Alma Fletcher
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Heritage: Caucasian/English
Job Position: Schoolteacher
Physical Description: Alma has long, dark brown hair and blue eyes flecked with gold. She doesn’t smile very often, but when she does her whole face is transformed. She doesn’t have a face that stands out, but it’s one you remember. She is short, slightly stocky, and curvy, standing at only four-foot-eleven and weighing one hundred and eight pounds. Her skin is light and free of blemish, and she takes care to keep it that way.
Alma normally wears her hair in a severe bun at the nape of her neck, although sometimes she winds it in a braid around her head. Her wardrobe consists of dresses cut along the lines of economy, not grace, and all made out of largely the same brown calico. It isn’t the most imaginative outfit in the world, but Alma is more concerned with life and getting things done than what she wears every day. She was never one to take much interest in her appearance. Around her neck, she always wears a heart-shaped gold locket containing two pictures: one of a small girl with long, dark brown hair hugging a taller girl with shorter, reddish-brown hair, the other of the reddish-brown haired girl with a red-haired boy.
Her hair falls to about her waist when not in its bun, with just a slight wave to it. It’s all one length; she tried getting it layered one summer and hated it because she had so much trouble getting it back into the bun. She doesn’t wear it in a bang, not liking the feel of the fringe brushing her eyebrows. Her azure eyes have that wide-eyed-innocence feel to them most of the time; however, at times it can seem as though she were looking right through something or someone.
Personality: Generally speaking, Alma is a quiet soul. She doesn't talk much, and when she does, her voice never gets very loud. Although she's not exactly shy, she tends to be more of a loner and doesn't make friends easily. It is simply difficult for her to really trust anyone until she's known them for a while, although she will seem friendly. People learn quickly that just because Alma smiles at them and is nice to them doesn't mean she trusts them. It just means she doesn't dislike them. Rarely does she actually decide on sight that she hates someone, but when it happens, Elfie ignores them completely. Truthfully, Alma has a very warm heart and a great capacity for love, but it is very well protected. Rarely does she talk about her parents.
With the children she teaches, Alma is patient and hard-working. She tries tirelessly to make sure her students understand and learn, and she enjoys learning from them, too. Many a student has enthused about her to parents, only to have the parents try to talk to her and meet a smiling brick wall. In her classroom, Alma is transformed, almost a brand-new person, but as soon as the students leave, she returns to her original self.
Past: Alma was born in Boston to a well-to-do family, the only girl and the youngest child. Her brothers spoiled her shamelessly, but from the cradle, all Alma wanted was to make her parents proud. Her father was a businessman and rarely home; her mother was more concerned with Society and had little time for her children. Alma grew up well-educated but without the love and affection she so desperately longed for.
At sixteen, helped by her oldest brother, she took a number of tests and received her teaching certificate. Her mother was against her teaching, wanting her to instead focus on marriage and coming out in Society, and Alma quietly tried to do what her mother wanted. However, while her mother was attempting to arrange a marriage for her, she was unfortunately killed in a carriage accident. Her father withdrew further into his business, her brothers all focused on their own life paths, and Alma began looking for a teaching position.
Alma's brother James had gone West with his family, and he wrote back to her that he had stopped in Cahone and that they were looking for a teacher. Alma, then seventeen, wrote to the town asking for the position, and it was granted. She travelled out in the care of a family emigrating a little further than Cahone, arrived in the town, and began teaching. She boards with the Rev. Whitman and his wife, at least until she can find a place of her own.
