It was her first day at her job, and Rose's stomach wouldn't stop doing flip flops. She had barely eaten any of the breakfast the reverand's wife had graciously shared with her because of her stomach's fretting.
Standing in front of the church, she waited for the students, silently praying everything would go alright; she was usually good with kids, but she had never tried to teach them before. As she waited, she touched her hair, which was still wet from the bath she had taken that morning. It had been wonderful to finally wash away layer of dirt she had built over the past few days, even though the water was freezing. I suppose I will have to get used to that... Rose had felt foolish when she asked Mrs. Whitman why the water wasn't hot, and the other woman had laughed; apparently hot water was a luxury, since not everyone had time to heat up the bath. "There are too many chores to get done," Mrs. Whitman explained, gently patting Rose's hand.
Rubbing her fingers together, Rose wondered if she would ever fit in a place like this; a place not of comforts, but one of hard work and sacrifice. She used to pine for a different life, one of hardship and freedom. But now that she was actually living it, she discovered it wasn't as glorious as she had originally thought.
Her musings were interrupted by the voices of children running down the street, heading for the church. Inhaling deeply, Rose readied herself for the onslaught, putting a smile on her face. Well...here goes nothing.
